Changes To Facebook’s News Feed Content Controls - What It Means For Your Business.

In November 2014, Facebook announced that they would be introducing new content rules to reduce the number of overly promotional posts appearing on people’s News Feeds. These controls were recently implemented at the beginning of 2015 as a response to an ongoing survey of hundreds of thousands of Facebook users. Users reported that they wanted to see more content from friends and pages that they really cared about and less promotional posts. Interestingly Facebook found that users were most frustrated by promotional posts from pages they had ‘liked’, rather than adverts. This likely to be because adverts have always been monitored more closely than posts and the number of ads on a user’s News Feed is restricted, while until now, promotional posts from liked pages were not so strictly controlled.

According to Facebook’s survey, these are the 3 qualities that make organic posts feel too promotional and need to be reduced:

  • Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app.
  • Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context.
  • Posts that reuse the exact content from ads.

So what does all this mean for your business Facebook page? Facebook states, “pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time.” If you’re not already paying for promoted posts or Facebook Ads, it’s time to start thinking about doing so, in order to keep your business’ presence on Facebook alive. All businesses should also work on improving the quality of their organic posts in order to try and fit Facebook’s new standards and controls.
